Here we are. Prepare to be inspired by the Masters. Enjoy the entertainment. Gorge on golf. But then, next week get out there. Bring that inspiration to your golf game. Whether it's learning, practicing, or playing, enjoy the greatest game on the planet: http://bit.ly/2U72wo5
Next week is April, and we all know what that means. Yes, it’s time for The Masters, and the golf season is off and running. April 11th to 14th at Augusta is when one of the greatest shows on earth gets underway.
On approach shots, take one club more than you think you need, make a good shoulder turn but concentrate on tempo rather than power. Let us know how it goes: http://bit.ly/2ULpeDB
Most of you know that your position at address isn’t the same as your position at impact. But not so many amateur golfers can show us the correct impact position. We can help: http://bit.ly/2UA2tST
The young guns are all over the major golf tours now. They’re lithe, strong, and can hit the golf ball a long, long way. But in recent weeks two of the older members of the PGA Tour have reminded us that to be at the top you need to be able to play all sorts of shots. Why do you want to play better golf? If you speak to fitness trainers many will tell you that a customer who says “I want to lose weight” is already a lost cause. It is insufficient motivation to stick with a fitness program.
Golf is the same. For most of us, “I want to lower my handicap” is not actually a great motivator to stick with an improvement plan. Want to chat about your motivation for improvement?: http://bit.ly/2EDep0R
It is often said that the quickest way to lower your handicap or improve your scorecard is to improve your putting and then your short game. But I wonder if lowering your handicap is the biggest motivator for improvement? Which would be more likely to motivate you: lowering your handicap or having a more enjoyable round? http://bit.ly/2Ek85Ls
The new rules have come in for some scrutiny in the professional tournaments around the world over the past couple of weeks. There’s clearly clarification on the rules required in some cases.
Which of the rules is your particular favorite and which one seems the most pointless to you? Let me know what you think? http://bit.ly/2Byv3Nc
We’re a month closer to playing golf again. It’s time to start making plans. If new equipment isn’t in your plans, then at least think about putting new grips on your clubs. It’s good practice. It helps your golf game. And that means more enjoyment and less frustration. And when you do bring your clubs in to get new grips, let’s just check that grip size and talk about where you miss (when you miss). Grips, correctly fitted, make it much easier to release the club correctly. Contact us: http://bit.ly/2Sf1cCH
Start thinking about golf now. Not improvements you want to make to your swing, competitions you want to win or accomplishments and achievements you’d like to make. Think about how you can use golf to strengthen relationships and friendships. How it can add joy to your life. Plan to schedule a regular social game with friends. Every other week, when the spring and summer comes, get a group of friends together and play a social, fun competition. A social, pairs or scramble competition should be on every group of friends’ calendars: http://bit.ly/2RyG9vA
Amongst the resolutions people will have made for 2019, many will fall under the categories of “Health & well-being”; “Social engagement”; and “Time for yourself”. Guess what? Golf delivers on all of those.
Some of you will be reading this from warmer climates. Get out. Walk. Play golf. It’s good for your whole well-being.
Those of you who can’t fly south should still find the time to get outside. Keep walking. Stay fit and healthy. The good weather will come again: http://bit.ly/2RhWowF
Do you have a planned fitness regime for the winter? Flexibility, the ability to rotate the upper body, and a strong core, all help to keep you golf ready. They also help with you total well-being.
If you haven’t bought any new outerwear in the last few years, then try on some of the new arrivals in the shops. Thinner, lighter, warmer, drier. It seems impossible, but it’s not just golf balls that are benefitting from advances in technology. Click here for more: http://bit.ly/2SS6tO5
When we look at club choice, amateurs select a club for approach shots that, if they hit it perfectly, will get to the middle of the green. Try a round where you choose a club that should get to the very back of the green, and then see if you hit more greens.
I’ve watched quite a few golfers playing mid-range pitch shots over the last weeks. There seems to be one of two techniques used by the majority to try and get the ball to stop quickly. Learning to play this shot well with the correct technique will make a big difference to your scorecard. Contact us now: http://bit.ly/2CD1LOA
The ball flight of the Professionals on mid and longer wedge shots is almost always significantly lower than those we see amateurs playing. But these lower flighted shots land, hop and stop quickly. Can yours do that? Contact us: http://bit.ly/2NNNroB
For what it’s worth, we’d like to make the observation that team golf is a lot of fun. Despite the heat of battle at the Ryder Cup, it’s a very social event. Anyone want to give it a try? Let us know: http://bit.ly/2yctEt7
It’s Ryder Cup week. What an event. What spectacle. In a suburb in the southwest of Paris, France the 42nd Ryder Cup Matches will take place on the Albatros Course of Le Golf National, Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
Do the players allow the stage and emotion to take them to greater playing heights? Watch the video by opening our newsletter: http://bit.ly/2IklZxu
On a scale of zero to ten, each time you play, how important is your playing experience? By that I mean your experience hitting your shots?

We want you to focus on how much pleasure there is, for the vast majority of regular and occasional golfers, in a golf shot that’s struck in the sweet spot. They say it’s the one great shot that brings you back again.
“The founders of this great game came from a generation where everything was a struggle; just for life. So why shouldn’t golf be a struggle as well? And to even out that struggle between competitors, a handicapping system was introduced."
Brooks Koepka bags his third Major in 14 months and becomes only the 5th person to win the US Open and PGA Championship in the same year. To see how we can help you enjoy your golf more click here: http://bit.ly/2PjwYKL

Tomorrow may be your last chance of the season to see what the buzz is about when PXG is back here at the club for fittings.
From 10am-1pm, PXG will be on the range to showcase their complete equipment line: drivers, fairways, hybrids, wedges, irons and putters. While they may not be the biggest name in golf, they certainly can create a big buzz!!
There are still a few spots left for individual appointments, so if you'd like to get fi (or just see what all the noise is about), please let me know so you can be added to the schedule!!
The newest and hottest name in golf equipment, PXG, is here today from noon-5pm, for an exclusive fitting day. Started three years ago by Godaddy.com founder Bob Parsons as his project to develop the best possible golf clubs, the company has taken off and its' presence is being felt throughout the golf world and professional tours.
This distribution of this line is extremely limited, so you won't see it at a lot of other clubs in the area. Fitting appointments are available from 12-5pm, or just stop by to see what all the buzz is about!!

The first men's major brings us our first major pool of the year for the Masters. Since it's been a long winter, we figured we would take it easy on everyone to start off the season...
Very easy...just pick any six players from the field and the best four who make the weekend cut will count. That's it--no limit on how many of the top 10, etc.
If you need to take a look at the players who make up this week's field, click on the below link:
Email your picks in by 7pm on Wednesday. Entries are $20 per...enter as many times as you want, just make sure you email them all in by Wednesday night.
Three weeks ago I wrote about this being the best month of sports...March Madness is wrapping up with tonight's Final Four and then Monday's National Championship Game. Just in time for the best part of the month, and a golfer's official beginning of spring, the Masters. I can already hear the theme music...and if you can't, take a listen by clicking on the video (DISCLAIMER...You may be humming the same tune all week after listening to it)
And tomorrow morning we get our first glimpse of the hallowed home of the green jacket with the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship. As you can see in the picture, the folks at Augusta National give the kids the full experience, and boy did they earn it. Each of the kids has survived three rounds of qualifying in their area, with the Regionals being the last and being held at other amazing clubs like Hazeltine, TPC Sawgrass, and our region at The Country Club in Brookline.
If you have a junior golfer in the family and want to try to get to next year's championship, registration is open at the below link
Local qualifying begins in mid-May, with the 2018 national finals once again scheduled for the Sunday before the Masters next April.
As far as this year, tune into the Golf Channel beginning at 8:00am tomorrow to get our first glimpse of Spring, and watch some kids have the time of their lives.

Well, at least in my opinion, the best four weeks in sports are about to be upon us.
The NCAA Basketball Tournament (followed by the Masters) provide us with must-see television well into the wee hours of the night over the coming weekends.
Here at the club we will once again be running our March Madness Kirkbrae Challenge bracket pool. This year's winner will receive the all-new Callaway EPIC driver...not a bad way to start off the season!!
You Can't Always Get What You Want.....But We Did This Time!!
With all due respect to The Rolling Stones, today many golfers got exactly what they wanted....a simpler, more common-sense set of golf rules.
Now, before you get too excited, they won't go into effect until 2019, but this morning the USGA and R&A announced the most comprehensive changes to the rules of golf since the game was wing played only in the sheep pastures of Scotland.
Highlights include: ---Fixing Spike Marks ---Time for Search for a lost ball down to 3 minutes ---Allowing the player to ground his/her club in a "penalty area" (expanded definition of water hazards that does not include bunkers) ---Putting with the Flagstick in the Hole
While these may seem drastic to some traditionalists, they're being made to not only simplify the game, but also speed it up.
To view a quick video that discusses all of the potential changes (there is almost 30 of them), click on the following link:
As you look out the window today, you're probably not thinking about golf....but for a brief moment this may help.
Below you'll see a screenshot of an interview with Rhode Island's own Brad Faron, discussing putting (which he is well-known as one of the best in the world) and putting aids. And the basic gist of what he's saying...trust your stroke.
The whole point of the game is to get the ball in the hole...period. If your aim is a little off, but the ball ends up in the hole, don't sweat it. Everyone makes a slight manipulation in their stroke...if things start going haywire, let me know and we can take a quick look and make a slight adjustment.
Putting is all about feel and confidence. What works for one may not work for the other, and you have to be comfortable with what you're doing...if you're not, then it won't work for you. Ponder that as we watch the snowflakes fly...

Today's your first chance to make your 2017 season EPIC at our Callaway fitting event. From 4-7pm at Mike Harbour's Indoor Golf (100 Federal Way in Johnston), Callaway representatives will be on-hand to help you add 10 yards (or more) to your game.
Make sure you bring your current driver to compare...let's add some yardage (and fun) in 2017!!!
I really didn't think I'd be sending this email just 30 minutes ago, but all I can say is WOW!!!!
Patriots Super Bowl Champions clothing will be available in the golf shop beginning next week. Please see the picture below to see what will be available, and if you'd like to reserve a piece or two, email me your request and we will hold it aside once it comes in...
How does an extra 10 yards sound to you? May come up HUGE in tonight's game...or on the course the next time you play. Either way, it sounds great to me!!!
Join us this Tuesday for our rescheduled EPIC fitting event (courtesy of Callaway Golf) to get started adding yardage to your game. There's nothing more satisfying in the game than hitting the ball further---we're here to help you get there.
Fittings start at 4pm (until 7pm) at Mike Harbour's Indoor Golf in Johnston (100 Federal Way, right off Route 6 & 295). Shoot me an email if you'd like to book a specific time (last booking is 6:30pm), or just stop by and give things a try.
You'll love being closer to the green than ever before...stop by Tuesday and you'll be on your way!!!
With the forecast calling for the heaviest snows to occur between 3-6pm this afternoon, we have decided to postpone the EPIC Demo event that was scheduled for this evening.
I am in the process of rescheduling for next week and will notify everyone of the date and time once it has been finalized.
Well, the day has almost arrived...your first chance to try out he all-new EPIC driver from Callaway Golf.
I was fortunate to try it out during last week's PGA Merchandise Show and it is definitely worth the hype (even with 3+ months' worth of rust on my swing)!!
Tomorrow's Indoor Demo takes place at the Mike Harbour Indoor Golf Center (100 Federal Way in Johnston---right off Route 6 near 295) from 4-7pm. I have a number of fittings already scheduled, so please shoot me an email if you'd like to reserve a time.
Golf season is right around the corner. Let's find the way to add 10 yards to your game---and there's no better time to start than now.
Tuesday January 31 Could be the Day You Become EPIC!!!
Next week, the eyes of the golfing world will be on Orlando for the annual PGA Merchandise Show, truly the Major of the Golf Business.
All of the buzz heading into the week on the equipment side of things is about the Callaway EPIC driver that I mentioned last week. The video below has some additional information (some of which was mentioned last week, some of which is new) on what actually went into the design of the line.
So, what does this have to do with you in the middle of the winter? Well, we will be having an indoor Callaway fitting night on Tuesday January 31st from 4-7pm at the Mike Harbour Indoor Golf Center (100 Federal Way in Johnston). This event is for Kirkbrae members (and invited guests) only and is your chance to get fit for the new EPIC just 3 days after it is available.
If you'd like to book a time for a fitting, please email me and I will reserve your time. Take advantage---it will EPIC!!
Two weeks from now I'll be at the PGA Merchandise Show, where every manufacturer in the game is showcasing their latest innovations.
This season, you;re not going to be able to talk about innovation in golf without discussing the new Callaway EPIC driver and fairways. This new line is already the buzz on tour (just ask Rory McIlroy, who is using it this week in his season debut--and he's NOT on Callaway staff) and will be for sale beginning Friday January 27th.
We already have our supply of fitting heads and shafts here in the golf shop--once the snow clears we will be ready to fit anyone who wants to give it a try!!
Take a look at this quick video to see how exactly the EPIC provides additional distance and forgiveness by using all-new Jailbreak (cool name, huh??) technology
Due to the inclement weather the club will be closing at 4pm today. Takeout is available by calling the dining room at 401-333-1300 x270 until 330 pm. The club will be open normal business hours tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the next 7-10 days does not look promising for golf. After consideration of this, the decision has been made to cover the greens for the winter this Monday, December 5th.
Temporary greens will be in effect until the re-opening in the spring.
Effective until December 24th, the golf shop will be open 9am-5pm Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 8am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays. It will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Also, please remember to remove your golf bag from the bag room before December 18th.
Anyone who has gone online at any point today knows that today is #GivingTuesday, a day to share with those less fortunate after the retail bonanzas of Black Friday and Cyber Monday...
...so there is no better time than now to kick off the golf shop's annual Toys for Tots Collection. As in years past, all of the toys will be donated to the Cumberland-Lincoln Boys and Girls Club for them to distribute to the less fortunate children of the area.
Time is a little tight this year, though, as the annual holiday party at the Boys & Girls Club is at the end of next week, so I'm asking that all donated toys be dropped off at the golf shop by Wednesday December 7th. Please leave the gifts unwrapped as it makes it easier for them to be passed out to the correct age and gender.
As an added bonus for your generosity, every toy donated will get you an entry into a raffle for one of our framed aerial photos--a $249 value. Just a little perk for giving a little during this holiday season.
I hope everyone enjoyed a fantastic day with the their family today!!
If you've been watching the games today, you've seen the steady stream of Black Friday ads for the chain stores...and by now you know the routine. "Doorbusters" and "Flash Sales", all "while supplies last." Not to mention the traffic getting in and out??
Why not make the golf shop your gifting headquarters?? We not only have golf apparel and accessories (with new product hitting the shelves daily for the next few weeks), but great non-golf gifts like luggage, bar ware, and sunglasses, for example.
This weekend, you get a great deal on one of our best gift ideas--Maui Jim sunglasses. Prices are set on Maui Jims at other outlets, but here in the golf shop you can take 30% off all in-stock pairs from Friday through Sunday. This is a savings of up to $90 off prices you'll get at the mall...and you don't have to pay for parking!!
As always, free gift-wrapping is available on all purchases. Enjoy the rest of your evening and make sure you stop by to cash in on this great deal---it will go away at the close of business Sunday evening. For those of you who are looking to use the remainder of your Tournament Credit balance in the golf shop, you have just 11 days left until the deadline of November 30th. Now would be a great time to come to the golf shop and start your holiday shopping--we have a tremendous selection of gift ideas!!
For those with large balances who may think they don't want to use all of their credits, we are offering a Tournament Credit Amnesty program. People will be able to carry forward a balance of either $500 or $250--if your balance is above either of those, just spend down to that point and you can carry the rest to the 2017 season. This puts you in the driver's seat for when we reopen in the Spring!! The only catch is that the carried-over amount MUST be used by May 31, 2017--makes no difference what kind of merchandise you use it for, just do so by the end of next May.
Balances under the $250 threshold can not be carried forward, so please make sure you take advantage of the excellent variety of goods currently available. There is truly a gift (or two or three) in the shop for everyone!!

Two-person teams will play a scramble for gross skins and net score. And, as an example, none of the three teams who won skins last weekend had a single-digit handicap player, so it truly is "anyone can win". Plus, there is a separate prize for the teams that have the best score over 2 of the 3 events.
The entry fee of $100 per person includes breakfast, lunch, golf and prizes. Golf is a 10:00 shotgun start for all players.
Sign-up in the golf shop or via email by 5pm Thursday. Members may also bring guests, so bring a friend or family member and see if you can cash in! The entry fee of $100 per person includes breakfast, lunch, golf and prizes. Golf is a 10:00 shotgun start for all players.

It's Gonna Be One of Those Days (In a Good Way!!)....
This morning showed everyone that winter is on it's way...frost on the windshield, temps in the 20s. As you can see, though, the weather for tomorrow is going to be fantastic with temps in the mid- to high-sixties.
It's going to be one of those days...that you'll be dreaming about over the winter. So why not take advantage and had to the club? A little Indian Summer golf on"hump" day to break up your week!!
The tee sheet is open on-line to book your tee time. Have a great day and I hop to see you at the club tomorrow!!! The tee sheet is open on-line to book your tee time. Have a great day and I hop to see you at the club tomorrow!!!" />
It may be tough to believe with today's frigid temps, but Saturday's weather looks great for the first Shootout Series event!!!
The 10:00 shotgun is a two-person scramble format with teams playing for gross skins and net team score. Plus, there is a separate cash pool for teams that play at least 2 of the 3 events based on their best net score total for 36-holes.
Entry fee of $100 per person includes golf cart, breakfast, lunch and cash pools. Sign-up by tomorrow evening either in the golf shop or via email.
Don't miss out on what are always some of our highest-attended events of the season!!
Due to the rain that passed through the area early this morning and the resulting wet conditions, the golf course maintenance staff is not able to aerate the greens today.
The greens aeration will now take place tomorrow so the golf course will be closed on Tuesday.
The golf shop, bag room and practice range will be open from 9am-5pm on Tuesday.
Weather permitting, the golf course will re-open for play Wednesday morning at 8:30am.
The time is nearing for the Fall Shootout Series events to begin. These two-person scramble tournaments are always some of the best attended events of the golfing season.
The three events will be held on Saturdays October 29, November 12 & November 19 and we will once again be offering a best 2 of 3 total score pool for teams that play in at least two of the events.
Each event is a 10:00am shotgun and the entry fee is $100 per player per event. Entry fee includes golf cart, continental breakfast and lunch afterwards plus pools for Gross skins and Net team score.
The final men's member-guest of the 2016 season will take place this coming Thursday, October 13th. Lunch will begin at 11:45 am, followed by 1:00 pm shotgun start for golf with dinner and awards to follow.
The entry fee, which includes food, prizes and favors, is $160 for those who bring one guest and $320 for those who bring three guests.
There are still some spots available, so take advantage of this great opportunity to entertain clients, friends or family and sign-up now in the golf shop.
It pains me to say it, but cooler temps are definitely on their way. The morning and evening chills are here to stay, so why not "gear up" to stay warm.
New to the golf shop are club-logged "hoodie" sweatshirts and winter hats. Both are available in two different colors (as you can see in the picture), and the hoodies in sizes for everyone (S-XXL).

This email serves as the last call for this Sunday's Couples Club Championship.
Tee times will be between 10-11am with a selected-drive, alternate shots format that should have everyone back inside to see the second half of the Patriots game!! Make your own foursome with another's couple or just sign-up and we will match you up...
Entry fee of $100 per couple includes prizes and a post-golf buffet.
The deadline to register is the close of business tomorrow, so be sure to either call-in or email your team ASAP so you don't miss out.
This email serves as the last call for the Men's Hole In One Pool. Payments for the pool ($50) must be made in the golf shop by Sunday October 2nd. The player list and accompanying rules sheet for the pool will then be posted in the men's locker room on Monday October 3rd.
Unfortunately, no late entries can be accepted, so please make every effort to make your payment by Sunday or you will be left out of this series.
Today is the day we've all been waiting for...the destruction of the 13th green begins!!
In all seriousness, though, the renovation of the 13th hole begins today, which results in some changes to the way the golf course will be played. Different from the last two years in that the entire hole is being renovated (tees, bunkers and green), there will not be a temporary hole set up on 13 at this time. This allows the construction crew to proceed as quickly and efficiently as possible which is key to proper grow-in since we are approaching the end of the growing season.
A coordinated effort between the Pro Shop, Greens and Long Range Planning committees is committed to minimizing the disruption to the membership while also providing a safe and enjoyable golfing experience for everyone. For this reason, we are asking everyone to follow the cart traffic direction when exiting the 12th green, where you will be directed to proceed to the 14th tee.
Players will be playing a 17-hole golf course for the time being. This decision was made in order to keep the practice range open for the membership. Scoring for Hole 13 will be according to USGA Handicap Rule 4-2, which states that the score for handicap purposes on any hole not completed will be "par PLUS any handicap strokes the player is entitled to receive on the hole."
Since #13 is the 6th-rated handicap hole, players with handicap 5 and under will record a 4 as their score for the 13th hole. Handicaps 6-23 will record a 5, handicaps 24-41 will record a 6 and players with a handicap of 42 or greater will record a 7.
While we understand that everyone is excited and wants to see what is happening, you are asked to obey all signs and to refrain from walking/driving in areas under construction. This truly is an exciting time here at the club as we continue to look to the future and maintain our status as one of the top country clubs in the area. The twentieth anniversary of the Alpine-Kirkbrae Ryder Cup did not disappoint as it was by far the closest and most riveting finish yet. Kirkbrae trailed heading into today's singles action by a 9-7 score but came out of the gate on fire, claiming 7 of the first 8 points on the board to build a sizeable lead. Alpine wasn't going down quietly, though, as they went on a run of their own, to the point that the score was tied 19 1/2 apiece with only one match left on the course.
That match see-sawed all day but would ultimately turn for good on the sixteenth, as our own Rob Richardson made a clutch 6-foot putt for par to go to 1-up. He then followed that up with another clutch par save on 17 to remain in the lead heading to 18. After James Atamian of Alpine came soooooo close to making the sixth eagle in club history on the final hole, Rob hit the chip shot that will go down in legend here at the club, nestling his ball next to the cup from the front right rough. After Atamian once again scared the hole with his birdie putt, Rob cleaned up his par from a foot (as you can see in the video) to claim the victory, 1-up, and the cup, 20 1/2-19 1/2, for Team Kirkbrae.
A fantastic weekend of golf and camaraderie ended with a "photo finish" at the end for the first time in the history of the event, kicking off an afternoon of celebrating for the home squad. Congratulations to both teams for a tremendous tournament!!!
The 2016 Ryder Cup ends today at the club with 24 singles matches up for grabs.
The action has been furious the past two days. Kirkbrae grabbed a 5-point lead on Friday, then Alpine came roaring back with a 7.5-0.5 Saturday score, bringing the two-day total to Alpine 9, Kirkbrae 7.
Tomorrow the Alpine-Kirkbrae Ryder Cup celebrates its' twentieth anniversary with the first round of this year's matches here at the club. Team Kirkbrae will be attempting to regain the cup that was lost last year after three straight victories.
For those of you who can't make it to the club to watch but want to keep up on the action as it unfolds throughout the weekend, we've set up an on-line scoring portal that will be updated as the matches progress.
The scoreboard is viewable on your mobile device, but for the best results, click on "full screen" on a tablet or desktop computer. As the weekend progresses, simply click on the tab on the bottom of the screen to check-in on Saturday and/or Sunday.
Start time is 1:00 Friday, 9:00 Saturday (at Alpine) and then 8:00 Sunday back home at Kirkbrae.
Good luck to the team. Bring the Cup Back!! Start time is 1:00 Friday, 9:00 Saturday (at Alpine) and then 8:00 Sunday back home at Kirkbrae.

Tomorrow we are hosting a Callaway Demo Day on the range with some tremendous new equipment that is brand-new (but old?) to the market.
The first offering may sound a little familiar...Steelhead irons. As you can see in the picture, Callaway has been able to take the shape of the extremely successful Steelhead irons of the early 2000s (Whodoesn't remember the Xs? x-12, x-14, x-16, etc....) and add the forgiveness and distance of the modern XR irons. It is truly the best of both worlds!!
Then, for those of you who need maximum forgiveness and distance in one club, there are the all new Big Bertha irons. Designed for those with slower swing speeds in mind, the Bertha irons are the most forgiving iron Callaway has made.
Come by the range tomorrow to see all of this and more...any time between noon and 5pm!!
Course Record during the RI Open...and how it affects you??
The club had a new competitive course record set today during the Rhode Island Open as James Thresher shot an amazing 7-under 63 (course played to a par-70 this week)!!! This ties the previous record but is the lowest score shot in competition in the club's history....and he finished second!!
So how does this affect you?
Well, what's your course record (lowest score)? While it may not be in the 60s (or even 70s or 80s), we all have a number that we've achieved...and struggle to better. So how can I help you set a new record?
After watching some great golf here at the club over the past three days, I noticed that more important than a picture-perfect swing are a great short game and solid game management.
That's where we can work. While we all don't have time to hone a TV-ready golf swing, there are definitely ways to shore up your short game and game management that we all can take advantage of....
I've got an idea about this that I'll share with you over the weekend---keep your eyes peeled for the details...
I want you to set your new record...and then everyone will get a picture of your scorecard!!
Kirkbrae once again puts its' best foot forward this week, hosting the 85th Rhode Island Open Championship. Ninety-nine players (professionals and amateurs) will play two days and then the field will be trimmed to the top 40 players (and ties) for Thursday's final round.
This will result in course closures on Tuesday and Wednesday until 2:00pm and then Thursday until 10:30am. The couples league will play on Tuesday evening but the Twilight League will NOT play on Wednesday evening.
Members and guests are invited to come and watch the action all three days. If you do plan to do so, please remember that spectator carts are NOT allowed---cars are limited to the players, event staff and club staff only.
A record 43 players are competing in 6 divisions---Kudos to everyone for participating!!
Matches have been assigned dates and tee times. Matches can be played early by agreement of both players ONLY. If both parties of a match can't agree upon an earlier time or date, then the match MUST be played on the assigned date at the assigned time.

After three days of doom and gloom due to the rainy weather, the PGA Championship didn't fail to entertain with a tremendous finish. Jason Day's late charge was one shot too little, as Jimmy Walker held on to claim his first major title.
Here at the club, no one has Walker in the PGA pool, and a lot of people had both Rory and DJ dragging down their teams. Even with those two dragging him down, Joe Rendine was able to put a team together that totaled-27, leading to his victory in the pool.
The complete breakdown of the results can be viewed at the following link:
Coming just a mere ten days after the Britiish Open, this year's final major starts Thursday. The PGA Championship takes place at Baltusrol, located just outside of New Yok City in suburban New Jersey.
Our pool for this week is even more simple. Pick any five players from the field and your best three count towards your team score. You must have three players make the cut in order to be counted.

Good luck and one word of professional advice: the last 6 winners of the Open when at Royal Troon were all from the same country---the United States.

Bocce Tournament Postponed....Glow Ball Next Saturday!!!
Due to a questionable weather forecast for this evening as well as lower than anticipated registrations, tonight's bocce tournament has been cancelled. We are currently exploring dates to reschedule sometime next month---more details will be sent out when it is finalized.

The Independence Day Weekend is full of fantastic events here at the club that you won't want to miss. Everything kicked-off in style with our two member guest tournaments today and will end on Monday evening with our annual fireworks display. In between you will notice a full schedule to keep everyone in the spirit.
Also, for the entire weekend, you will see some changes on the golf course:
First, we are encouraging everyone to Tee It Forward with all of our pro shop games being played from the White markers all weekend. There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with playing a shorter golf course...shorter approach shots lend themselves to shorter putts resulting in lower scores. Have fun and make some birdies!! That's what we are playing for, isn't it---FUN!!
Secondly. you will notice that the normal flags on the golf course have been been replaced with American flags in celebration of the holiday. Remember that American flags are not supposed to touch the ground... please alternate holding the flag with your playing partners to insure that the flag always stays off the ground. While one player holds the flag, the others can putt out...then switch and allow the last player to finish the hole. The normal flags will be back on the greens come Tuesday.
On a different note, if you are heading to the pool, a family party, or even to the gym, you can show your pride in your club as well as your country with one of our patriotic-themed UnderArmour tech tee shirts that can be seen in the picture. Available in Grey, Navy, Red and White, these are truly a limited edition piece and will only be available in the golf shop while supplies last.
I hope to see everyone at the club this weekend...but no matter where your travels take you, have a fantastic Fourth!!!
Don't forget about our Callaway Demo Day tomorrow from 1-6pm.

The US Open Pool can be viewed by clicking on the link below...and, no, no one has Shane Lowry so it is going to be quite a shootout here at least. Scores are posted through the completion of the third round this morning.
The men's Final Four wrapped up the Four-Ball Championship with some riveting action. Both of the semifinal matches plus today's final all went the full 18 holes with a 1-up result.
Vin Cavallaro and Al Peterson became the first four-time champions of the event with their one-up victory over the father/son team of Matt and Domenic Mainelli.
In the consolation bracket final, Bob Maceroni made four birdies alongside his brother Steve to result in a 4&3 victory over Ralph Delmonico and Rocco Pezza.
For a quick view of the Championship action, see the wrap-up video for One Shining Moment....
But it makes me wonder when I see golf clubs in players' bags with worn, torn, weathered grips---it's just like trying to drive a car with no steering wheel. The grip is your connection to the club---poor connection, poor "steering".
Grip companies say that you should replace your grips every 30-40 rounds...for some that could be up to four times per year. While that may seem a little extreme to some (including myself), once a year is a solid basis to use.
The signs that your grips need replaced are:
• Smooth, hard surfaces • Cracks • Shiny Patches • Wear spots, especially where the thumb makes contact • Faded or bare spots on grips that have been painted or have logos • Complete loss of tack
As you can see in the picture, it is usually fairly obvious that your clubs are suffering from one of these signs.
If so, don't wait until it costs you shots. Stop by the golf shop---we have a ton of different options to regrip with. If you select an in-stock grip your clubs will be ready the next day.
Either way...don't delay. You wouldn't with your car...don't do so with your golf game!!

Do you know that the average player spends upwards of 60-70% of their shots from inside 30 yards of the green?
Even at the top levels, this holds true quite often. Rory McIlroy won the Irish Open three weeks ago at a total score of 276 (12-under par), of which 127 shots were putts. An amazing stat for a tour event winner--46% of his shots were ON THE GREEN!! This doesn't even mention other facets of the short game (bunker play, chipping, pitching, etc.).
So why then do people not take the time to get fit for their short game? Grab a putter off the rack, stroke a couple of putts and head on their way...maybe?? I can't tell you how many short game sessions with members that I'm come out of with either having to adjust (lie/length) or replace the player's equipment.
In this vein, Callaway/Odyssey will be here on Saturday from 7-10am to focus on one aspect of your game--the short game. We will be conducting fittings for putters and wedges only.
Just one degree off-line on a 10-foot putt results in a miss off the target line of 2.09 inches--meaning your ball is on the edge of the cup and probably won't go in. Make the miss 2* and you;re up to 4.19 inches--you just missed the hole by 2 inches!!
The point is that a small change in the short game means big things to your scores.. Even if you're not in the market for a putter or wedge, I urge you to stop by to see if a minor adjustment is needed. Or the next time you miss a 10' putt you'll wonder why???
Well, the kids are almost out of school for the summer...and you'll start to hear the words every parent dreads to hear..."I'm Bored"...
